Grow with Google

A traveling pop-up workshop with an approachable environment and wayfinding system to empower tech newbies across America

Lead designer, Concept to Execution

Launched in 2017, Grow with Google is a multi-billion dollar workforce readiness and business upskilling initiative. It aims to close the digital skills gap and provides free technology training, professional certificates, and career resources to job seekers, educators, and small businesses.

In conversation with Google’s Brand Studio, our team at Grow Marketing collaborated to produce the inaugural launch tour, creating the graphic identity and a modular set that was able to travel from city to city and adapt to any venue size or layout.

As the lead designer on the project, I developed initial moodboards to pitch different concepts and collaborated with an environments designer to create the physical sets and furniture.

To make the tour approachable to a wide audience that may be intimidated by tech, I created illustrations to pay homage to the host cities. These were based on symbols, landmarks, and cultural icons that were meaningful to the local community. These graphic elements appeared on badges, signage, collateral, and photomoments.

The set featured a modern workshop aesthetic through the use of custom pegboard and light woods with clean lines. Google's brand colors were used to delineate different types of spaces, while a cohesive signage system supported navigation.

Grow with Google travelling pop-up model was used for 6 years offering with free workshops, in-person training, and one-on-one help.
