Director’s Circle Dinner
A fresh approach to event design for an annual black tie dinner for modern art patrons
Director's Circle Dinner is a formal event that features a talk by a prominent contemporary artist for SFMOMA's top patrons.
2015's event honoring artist Julie Mehretu, encompassed a new spirit of openness and community and featured an open seating lottery to promote serendipity rather than a formal seating chart.
I developed the identity for the event that reflected the concept of surprise and intermixing through the use of a split fountain screenprint, where ink was mixed on the press to create unpredictable and subtly different graphic design with each print that was made. This identity was used on the invitation, signage, and programs.
To carry this concept through at the event, I commissioned handpainted table and seat numbers which were crafted out of wood blocks.
The invitation was finished with text letterpress on the reverse for a tactile and high-end result.
